The key to this power is the ability of the computer to connect with the internet and thereby to also connect millions of individuals throughout the world. </font></p> <p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS">But as powerful as this tool has become, it would remain an obscurity, were it not for the irrepressible desire for humans to seek out one another, and commune; to share themselves and their lives. The Internet Relay Chat (IRC) room has become for millions of people, what the local pub, neighborhood bar, or even local church (in a social sense) was for their parents and preceding generations.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Comic Sans MS">Introduction</font></p> <p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS">The 40NotOut Chat Room is not unique in its ability to serve as a cybernetic meeting place. There are literally thousands of chat rooms available on just Dal.net alone. What makes 40NotOut unique is the group of people - regulars, Channel Operators, visitors - that inhabit and animate the room, giving of themselves, creating a warm ambience and a sense of community.</font></p> <p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS">The people in this room represent many different nationalities, languages, cultures, religions, races, and socio-economical levels. Yet the conversations to be found here are never strained or hostile. Both male and female make their virtual homes here in this room, and yet the conversation is open and trusting, with fairness and equality a commodity which may be taken for granted.</font></p> <p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS">This is not to imply that conversations about our human diversities or cultural differences do not arise, for they do; and when they do, no group of university intellectuals could be found who could better explore and contribute to these discussions any more than our channel participants do. There is an unspoken agreement that because we are so diverse, we must work all the harder to understand one another, and to be certain that we, in turn, are not misunderstood.</font></p> <p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS">Interestingly, in the 40Not Out Chat Room, the topic of conversation will most often be oriented towards those topics which reinforce the similarities found among and between us. Humor, the extraordinary universal elixer for what ails us, is dispensed in nearly lethal doses.
